ABUJA MOMS WALK AGAINST CHILD MOLESTATION
On Saturday, 16th March 2019, hundreds of women from the elderly to nursing and even pregnant women, walked for miles and hours through the streets of Abuja to give sensitization on the need to end child molestation.
The advocacy walk was organized
by the Abuja Moms Foundation,an NGO dedicated to improving the lives of women
and less privileged children in Abuja. The mission of the Abuja Moms Foundation
is to serve as a catalyst in assisting women and children to develop themselves
through vocations that will help improve their potentials and make them
self-reliant.
Utilizing social media as a tool
for uniting women across cultural and religious backgrounds, the Abuja Moms
Foundation has over 33,000 registered women who are actively involved in
building each other up. Some projects they have executed includes: skills
acquisition training, IDP camp/orphanage/prison outreaches, Mom’s Trade Fair,
etc.
The advocacy walk tagged, “Walk
Against Child Molestation” began at the Unity Fountain through Maitama, Banex
and back. At each major junction and to every pocket of people on the street, the
women gave extensive sensitization on the need to fight against all forms of
child molestation.
Speaking to news men and
journalists, the President, Mrs Happiness Ani, said that she knows exactly how
molested children feel because she was molested as a child. She reiterated that
parents who cover such crimes against their children or house helps in a bid to
protect their prestige are only contributing to the crime and increasing the
trauma these children grow up with.
Mrs Happiness further stated that while girl children are more prone to molestation, the boys are victims too and must be protected. Finally, she called on the government and concerned bodies to strengthen their work in seeing that children have safe environments to live, grow and play.
