Cynthia Abojei: Your voice is your power

Cynthia Abojei and I were schoolmates. Her bold personality got me interested in her. Then she would come out for debates and other activities that students would normally shy away from and everybody would be like 'Who is this girl?'. From that confident student, she has evolved to be a positive change agent affecting lives in her.

Cynthia Abojei is the chief executive officer of OJUOGE OREKELEWA VENTURES, a fashion and beauty brand she started right after her university education in 2012. She is a certified personnel manager with a degree in Economics from the University of Ibadan.

She has a passion for effecting change and strives to make a positive impact in her community. Her passion for positive change led to the formation of The STRONG INDEPENDENT INSPIRED SELF- TSIIS INITIATIVE in 2013. Her long term goal is to be known and seen as an agent of positive change. Omote Ro Dhe caught up with this amazon and she opened up about all she is about and stands for. Read excerpts of the exclusive interview below:

You are a clear example of beauty and brains. How has your background, education and entrepreneurial journey shaped you into who you are now?

I got introduced to business early through my father, he would take me to his meetings where I would sit in a corner and take notes, when we get back home, he would discuss what happened at the meeting with me and ask me to write down all that transpired in the meeting as a report to him, he taught me how to write proposals at a very early age, I guess he was preparing me for the future, then, going to the university and studying economics was and is still a plus in my dealings in business, as it helps me understand what I am up against in the business world and informs me of the next line of action to take.

Since your launch of The STRONG INDEPENDENT INSPIRED SELF- TSIIS INITIATIVE in 2013, how have you been forging from strength to strength pursuing its vision in the face of different opposition that comes with that territory?

It has not truly been a walk in the park, the opposition has been great, we haven't even began to scratch the surface of the things we ought to be doing, each time we go into schools to talk to these children/students we see the need, yearning and this strengthens our resolve to keep at it,( I use we- speaking of my team and I) as our major goal is to make impact.

What was the motivation for going into entrepreneurship with focus on fashion and beauty? And how do you stay motivated when low?

As a young girl, I always loved fashion and had a flair for everything beautiful. Right before I got the university, I remember telling my mother I would love to learn how to make clothes or hair; because I would love to own a fashion house one day, then she told me I can be anything I want to be if I get an education first.

I got into university, the hunger to still do fashion kept increasing, I knew that was what I wanted to do immediately after  I finish university. I see women who have gone ahead and made something for and off themselves regardless of their background, the likes of Tara Durotoye, Mrs Alakija, Agbani Darego etc, and I say to myself, if these women can make it regardless of their background, I can and will make it.

Through your initiative, issues you speak on gender inequality and domestic violence issues. What made you passionate about this?
Women seem to be very disadvantaged, in this part of the world, maybe because of the patriarchal nature of our society, it seems, they are to be seen but not to be heard.
As a girl child, firstborn my uncles turned their noses up when I was birthed as the firstborn child to my father, they also detested the fact that my father thought me worthy of attending very good and expensive schools at that time.
They really didn't see what the fuss was about a girl child, but my father did, and he stood up for me, not many girls have such a father who believed in them and would go the extra mile for them.
Looking at our society today, we see a lot of injustice being meted out to women, we see women in abusive marriages being battered and bruised, someone has to speak up, someone has to effect that change, why not me? This might just be the reason I had a father who believed and fought for me against all odds.

My first experience as a girl child who did nothing but just is born, yet I was already deemed unworthy to be the first child is first, where my passion stems from.

Every woman/lady has a voice to be a positive change agent. How can she use it well in our patriarchal society?
As a woman, your voice is your power, and you owe it to yourself to be heard, and sometimes you don't really need a big platform to be heard, starting from your home environment, your community.
I am not advocating you become unnecessarily difficult, no, but learn to speak up against whatever ill is going on around you, don't turn your eyes away, with the mindset that it doesn't concern you, because it does, everyone plays a part in community building.

You are very fashionable no wonder you have a fashion and beauty brand. How would you describe your fashion and style?
I used to consider my dress style as conservative, but it has evolved over the years, I am not afraid to play with colours, I don't go with trends,I go with what I am comfortable with, I am not afraid to make a statement with my fashion style,  these days my fashion style is tilting towards edgy.

As a learned entrepreneur, what is your take on education especially for girls? What is that one skill every girl/woman in today's world should strive to have?

Education has a solid role to play in the life of all and sundry, it gives a form of enlightenment, broadens your scope of reasoning and helps you think outside the box.
An educated girl child is an empowered girl child. Education 'no be scam', every girl child should be privileged enough to get an education.
In today's world, education is a prerequisite, a must-have, alongside that, a sellable skill should be acquired to give a boost.

Your long term goal is to be known and seen as an agent of positive change. Why?
The persons in history who are remembered today are persons who have made an impact and made a positive change in the world, so by the time I am done here on earth, I would like to be known as a person who made an impact and effected positive change as that is the only legacy worth passing down, it also shows that I truly lived.

I take life one step at a time, when I want to embark on any project, I say to myself, just start, and take it one step at a time (regardless of how daunting the journey might seem), this has helped me a lot, especially times I am about to feel discouraged.

What advice do you have for young women pursuing purpose?
It is okay to make mistakes, take it easy on yourself, make mistakes, learn from it, keep at it, as long as you do not give up, success is sure.
