Yewande Oyebo: Fear is the biggest blocker to women fulfilling purpose

Yetunde Oyebo may not remember, but we met at She Leads Workshop a few years ago. We were in the same group and developed an interest in each other discovering we do the same thing- Blogging! Even though she does it part-time but all the same, she is a blogger.

And since my focus this period is on bloggers, I didn't need to crack my head when Yewande came to mind. As a  career professional, she has other projects and job roles up her sleeves.

It was a great time chatting with her as she got to open up about herself, her career, interests, and more. Read excerpts from the chat:

How do you juggle multiple roles as Product Manager and Blogger?

I don't see blogging as a role. I blog because I enjoy it and when I get tired, I take a break or stop. I also understand my Priorities. Being a Product Manager pays the bills so I focus on that and when I have some extra time, I share my experiences on my blog. I also have no intention of being a full-time blogger (at least not yet)

What's your view about being a feminist knowing that it is biblically backed? Why that choice? What do you seek to achieve as one?

In Creation and in Christianity, There was no intention for any Gender to be superior or inferior to the other. See Galatians 3:28, Genesis 1:26-27, Genesis 5:1-2. Based on this, I believe the subjugation of any human because of their gender, race, age or class is a Sin and should be treated appropriately. I think when you gain a certain level of self-awareness, you'll have almost no choice but to be a Feminist, regardless of your Gender.

Can you tell us more about your blog? What motivated you to start one and how is it serving it purpose?

My blog www.yevandy.com is my little fun space on the internet. I enjoy writing and sharing my experiences and my blog provides a perfect space to do this. I write about anything that I find interesting TBH. I started blogging when I saw other people doing it and I was like, I can do this too na. The blog serves its purpose and even does more. So many people have been impacted by it and for this I am grateful.

What is the one thing that helps you relax?
Enjoyment makes me relax o.

Who are some of the women that inspire you and why?
Every woman who wakes up every morning and shows up as her badass self inspires me. A lot of women who have achieved great feats especially in tech and industries I am interested in inspire me but recently I have learnt to refocus and not get inspired by people but their choices and actions.
For example, Kamala Harris is an inspiration to me not because of who she is but because she made a choice to fight for the position she's in. Same as the poor Immigrant mother who sweeps the street who even though I don't know her name, does her job excellently, makes the choice to be nice to people, even those mean to her.
When I think of Inspiration this way, it allows me to see people as humans and not idolize, envy or judge them.

In this trying period of the COVID-19 pandemic how has it been for you? What is your routine like?

It's been a mix of highs and lows, but a lot of Gratitude for health and a source of Income. My routine is to sit my ass down at home, wear a mask when I need to go out and take my supplements. I cant wait to start travelling again

If you have to do something all over again, what would you change?
I honestly don't know. I would actually change some things o but nothing comes to mind now.

Can you share some of your strengths that has helped you in blogging?

How do you draw inspiration for writing? And how would you describe your writing style?

Inspiration is mostly from my personal experiences. i'm not sure i have a defined writing style yet. I guess I am a story teller..

What advice do you have for young women pursuing purpose?

Eliminate Fear and Uncertainty, Trust your guts/Instincts, Like/Love yourself. Fear, in my opinion is the biggest blocker of purpose for a lot of women I know.

None o.. I have been on a reading Block since COVID Lockdowns started. The last really good book i read was City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert.. Loved it.
