Chinenye Gloria: On surviving cancer, everyday is a blessing

I see Chinenye Gloria beyond just a cancer survivor. She is a perfect example of God's grace and mercy. She is a young lady who was given another chance at life, making the most of it to live it to the fullest. Having surmounted a life-changing health problem, her zest for life just got better.

Just as a wise man once said, "If life shows you pepper, make pepper soup". This summarises the little I know of Chinenye. From a direct message on TikTok to more conversations on WhatsApp led to this remarkable lady sharing her story of overcoming a major health challenge. The goal is simple, which is to inspire others that they can still breathe and live.

On TikTok, you will find Chinenye sharing uplifting content, most times taking us through her survivor story, other times pure entertainment. Behind the spotlight, she was vulnerable enough to share sad moments when she thinks of all she has to put up with post-her cancer treatment. I recall a particular video in which she broke down in tears because of her predicament. Days after, you begin to wonder if this is the same person as she bounces back bigger, brighter and happier.

Chinenye did not mince words in our chat. It came straight from her heart. Her message and story were clear. She wants other people with health challenges to have hope of healing and enjoying life. According to her point of view, it is not a death sentence. It is a challenge and, like every challenge, it has an expiry date....

Omote Ro Dhe had the pleasure of this encounter with her. Read excerpts below:

Can you introduce yourself and share a bit about your journey?

My name is Chinenye Gloria. I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, and I had my treatment, but I did not finish it. I had a recurrence and ended up being diagnosed with Stage 4, which spread to my lungs.

How would you describe who you are beyond the label of “cancer survivor”?

I'm just a girl that desire to be happy, travel the world, help people, get married and have my own kids and help people when I can.

Can you take us back to when you were first diagnosed?

In 2022, when I was first diagnosed, I had no clue what cancer was at all. I actually thought maybe after having a mastectomy, my problems were solved. Little did I know that cancer was a life on its own.

What were some of the hardest moments you faced?

I have two hardest moments, firstly, I had to make the decision to cut my breast at 25, and the second one was having to redo Chemotherapy again.

Were there any unexpected sources of strength or support?

Yes, people I don’t even know came through for me and supported me very well.

How has this experience changed you—physically, emotionally, or mentally?

This experience has shaped my life in so many ways that I don’t see things the same anymore, and I don’t focus on chasing life without looking out for myself.

Who or what held you up during your lowest moments?

God, my family, and my friends.

Are there things you no longer take for granted?

Yes, every day I wake up has been a blessing to me.

What kind of impact do you hope your story will have on others?

To make everyone out there fight and never lose hope, because if I can do it, they also can.

One place that feels safe to you?

The House of God.
